Here’s an interesting fact for you. Over 90% of people who are learning how to play the guitar themselves will end giving up due to pure frustration. And I believe the biggest culprit responsible for causing all these people to give up is the dreaded ‘F Guitar Chord’.
I can still remember when I learnt how to play this chord. It took me ages to just get my fingers in the right place, and when I finally did, I was rewarded for all my struggle and effort with a blunt ping type of noise. Which you have to admit is hardly rewarding
So if this sounds like you , then in the next 3 minutes, I will reveal to you, 3 powerful tips that will make learning how to play the dreaded F chord, much, much easier for you.
Tip 1: Don’t Use the Flat Face of Your Index Finger
A lot of people who first start learning this chord make the mistake of using the flat part of their index finger to lie across the first 2 strings. The problem with doing this is it makes it virtually impossible to get your other two fingers in place. Try using the edge of you 1st (index) finger. By doing this it will make it much easier to press down on the 1st two strings because the edge of your index finger is slightly harder, and it will roll your wrist around making it easier to place your other fingers down.
Tip 2: Pinch Instead of Grabbing The Guitar Neck
Whether you can press down on the first 2 strings with the edge of you finger or not, will be determined by what you do with your thumb.
Most people make the mistake with this chord of grabbing the neck instead of pinching it. If you keep your thumb in the middle of the neck and pinch, you’ll find that your index finger will naturally roll onto its edge.
Tip 3: Don’t press in the middle of the fret.
To get a nice clean sound with this chord, I recommend pressing behind the fret wire instead of in the middle of it.
The F chord is hard enough to play on its own without you making it harder too. Simply press your index finger down right behind the fret wire, and you’ll find that you’ll get a nice clean sound without having to exert much force.
The F chord is a challenge for most, but I promise you that if you stick with it, and use the 3 tips I’ve given you, that when you pull this chords off, & it will happen, the feeling of accomplishment that you will get, will be amazing.
