When practising your guitar, whether learning a new song, or simply playing a song you have played 20 times before remember one short phrase if you can.

Practise Makes Permanent

What I mean by that is, if you practise playing in a certain style, and you practise playing in that style for a long time, you will always play like that. The phrase practise makes perfect I really don’t like, because by that statement, you can sit there and practise playing the guitar awfully and then one day after you’ve spent enough time practising you will be perfect at the guitar, which as you know being the logical people that you are, is impossible. Therefore I think the statement practise makes permanent is much more fitting.

This in mind, when you are practising, ensure that what you are practising is correct, even if at first it appears you are doing it very badly, as long as what you are practising is the correct technique eventually after enough practise you will be able to do it successfully and also you will be doing the technique correctly, therefore benefiting your guitar skills more than doing something successfully but doing the technique itself wrong.

Moving onto to actually practising, you may find it hard to actually motivate yourself to being practise, or you may only practise your guitar for a short people of time. This is all because you have to get yourself into the right state of mind to begin practise.

Firstly, you cannot associate practise with chores, practise should be fun, you should choose to sit with your guitar and play out your favourite songs. Therefore, DON’T BE TOLD TO PRACTISE, CHOOSE TO PRACTISE! Just putting that simple step into action will altogether benefit what you will achieve in guitar practise, and your attitude towards it.

Secondly, set yourself a target time, and stick to it! Setting yourself a target time, say half an hour means that you know how long you have to play your guitar for, and you can fit it into your day. For example, get home from work/college/school, have a quick snack, half hour guitar practise then homework. This means that you can slot your guitar practise in and around your day, and you know what you are doing before and what you are doing after. Also try and put it before or after something really boring, that way you can associate your guitar with either your last treat before your homework, or your reward for doing your homework.

Thirdly, play the things you want to play! Don’t sit and practise scales if that day you really don’t want to practise scales, practise what you want to practise at the time, like a new song. Obviously do not neglect scales, come back to them another day and practise them, but forcing yourself to do them on a day when you really don’t want to isn’t going to make them any easier to play.

Lastly, remember….

Playing your guitar should be fun, not a chore!
