Visit The Guitar Classroom to learn the guitar

Let me guess…you are a jazz guitarist and have met a talented jazz singer you’d like to start gigging with…or…you just heard Joe Pass and Ella Fitzgerald together and would like to start something similar with a singer…or…you realized you can make a lot of money teaming up with a jazz singer and playing in duo…

These are usual situations that, as a jazz guitar player you might have encountered or that will certainly appear as possibilities during your career.

If you have never accompanied a jazz vocalist and are seeking advice on how to do it effectively, read on…I’ve played with jazz singers for years and I am certain I can give you a few tips.

First of all, before you pick your singer, ensure that she/he has her own charts, which doesn’t mean that she has photocopies of the real book. She must have charts transposed into her own key and, possibly, with clear arrangements.

This is SO critical!! specially if you are just starting and have no experience. Having Intros and outros for each tune, will give you a guideline to follow and make your rehearsals so much simpler!

Remember, there’s an abundance of singers out there. Take your time to choose the one whom it will be easier for you to work with on a regular basis.

Ok, with this out of the way, here are a few tips on how to accompany a jazz singer with taste:

1) Learn the melody of each song in the repertoire. It sounds obvious, however, you will be amazed to know that the charts that most musicians usually end up playing from show only chord changes. Not knowing the melody of the song will give you absolutely no clue on how to support your singer with both rhythmic and melodic ideas.

2) Learn to play in at least two different styles: swing and bossa nova. Most singers have both swing and Latin songs in their repertoire and will expect that you know how to accompany in these two styles. This will take you some time. Listen to Joe Pass, Martin Taylor and Tuck Andress and start getting a feel of how a solid and inspiring guitar accompaniment sounds like. Then, I recommend that you shop around for a finger style guitar method. There are quite a few out there. I personally would suggest to study transcriptions from Joe Pass to learn both Jazz guitar accompaniment and improvisation. Martin Taylor has published a book on fingerstyle that you can buy for a few dollars and that will keep you busy for years! You can study Brazilian guitar on a book by Nelson Farias. The book comes with a CD and is a step-by-step training on the topic (be patient!).

3) Keep things VERY simple when you accompany a jazz singer. I recall playing with a vocalist who kept asking me for more melody in my accompaniment. So I started playing more melody and things got even worse! Then I started experimenting with simple guide tones (3rd and 7th) and, all of a sudden, he was the happiest human being on earth…

4) Ensure that your timing is solid! You must be a reference for the singer and ALWAYS know where (in the song) you are. As I said, knowing the melody of the song will help your singer hear that you are both in the same place.

5) Take short solos! if you are playing a duet, playing long solos will draw attention from your singer, who is the one you are supposed to help spark. Use lots of chords in your solos, linking them with single lines. Play just one section of the song and cue your singer in when you are about to end your solo.

6) Be clear! play simple and incredibly clear. If you have been playing with a pick all your life, start practicing fingerstyle and gradually combine bass lines, chords and melody.

Ok these are just a few guidelines that I hope will put you in the right direction. Again, be patient, and start building your fingerstyle skills one step at at a time.
Francesco Amico has played jazz guitar for over 20 years.

Part of bettering as a guitar participant comes down to how aware you might be once you play. You should be taught to give attention to all of the completely different elements of your body on the lookout for unwanted tension or movement. Tension is without doubt one of the toughest issues a guitarists has to contend with. It sneaks in outside our consciousness and all we, the unsuspecting guitarist notices is their inability to play what they want. When you REALLY pay attention you may spot this little devil before it starts. You can solely do this if you’re conscious of your body while you play. guitar relax

An effective way to sharpen your sense is to vary your focus while you play. Begin by focusing in your face and neck, looking for tension. Concentrate on this area for a while until you are feeling it is absolutely relaxed. Then transfer onto your shoulders. This can be a really widespread space for tension in lots of people. Excess stress her can unfold down the arms, to the palms and even down into the diaphram. Not good should you’re a singer. At this level it would be price becoming more aware of your posture.

I’d heard about this Buckethead guy for just a few years before I ever heard him play. I vaguely remember seeing an image of him sporting a yellow raincoat and a Kentucky Fried Hen bucket on his head and thinking ‘Huh?’ And for some cause, I used to be initially underneath the impression that he was Japanese. I’m sure the explanation I surmised this was because of the Kabuki masks that he at all times wears.

So at some point, I decide to take a look at some of his music, the true benchmark of a guitarist. I pulled up a music of his online known as ‘Night of the Slunk’. Strange title- befitting of this man, I thought. It started out OK I suppose, nothing earth-shattering though.

After which it came to the solo. WOW. This was pace I hadn’t heard in a long time, perhaps in forever. I decided to go additional- I pulled up the music video for the track on YouTube. There he was, all lanky 6’ 7” of him, goofy bucket and all. Carrying dark inexperienced overalls, ala Michael Meyers in the film Halloween. Stretchy guitar strap that allow him flail his guitar around like a yo-yo. So far, unusual however not quite a bit to write down residence about.

However at three:47 into the tune, he went into the guitar solo- a fully insane guitar solo. NOW I was astonished! I’d by no means seen anyone play scales that fast, and but that perfectly. And this show of speed continued for almost a minute before launching into some form of triplet hammer-on riff that was so fully dissonant and off the charts that I totally lost it. It was official- this apparent oddball was essentially the most gifted and incredibly quick lead guitarist I’d ever seen.

Actually- go to YouTube at your earliest comfort and enter the keywords ‘Buckethead guitar lesson’ (how appropriate for this text!). Buckethead, by way of his belief hand puppet (don’t ask), gives the view a collection of six mini guitar lessons, in all probability taped backstage before a show. No, they’re not serious classes, but he does supply a glimpse into how he comes up with his weirdly advanced chops (he even breaks out an acoustic guitar for one strange riff). amazing guitar solo

One thing he uses often in his solo work is his Les Paul’s quantity switch. That’s proper, it’s an on/off change, not a typical quantity knob. He continues his fretwork whereas concurrently tapping the amount swap on and off in fast succession to provide his solos an otherworldly sound that is very efficient and is so completely ‘Buckethead’ that you can’t even imagine anyone else doing it.

While he primary type is all-out metal shredding, he is identified to interrupt out some of the coolest country and jazz licks you’ve ever heard. I’ve seen him finger-faucet the theme to Halloween- both the low be aware and the primary riff- at the same time. I am constantly amazed at his expertise and technique.

In the closing evaluation- in case you haven’t heard any of Buckethead’s music, and you love shredding as a lot as I do, do yourself a huge favor and take a look at this eccentric genius- you will not be disappointed.

Guitar teacher Paul Tauterouff has send us another guitar lesson, which The Guitar Classroom has published for their visitors :

Dropped-D Rhythm Guitar Patterns

Check out this guitar lesson and create some rhythm riffs while you have your low E string tuned to D. For those who are not familiar with this tuning, it is quiet easy to do, and it can gives a nice effect, it allows you to play power chords on the low E and A strings by barring one finger. This allows you easily change chords and slide between them.

Well, go and check it out: Dropped-D Rhythm Guitar Patterns

Drumming Lessons

In my last blog post I announced that The Guitar Classroom is now also providing singing lessons and piano lessons for their visitors.

Now I can tell you that we have more music lessons that could be of interest to you. First there are now accordion lessons available, and also violin lessons.

Furthermore The Guitar Classroom has found two excellent drumming lessons, one is called Drum Basics, the other Instant Drum Lessons.

If you are interested, check out these drum lessons now.

Maybe you are not so keen on learning to play another instrument and do you just stick to the guitar. Well, nothing wrong with that, although I believe having at least some knowledge about how to play an other instrument helps you to play guitar, especially if you play together with someone who plays this instrument.

One of the advantages of online guitar lessons is the fact that you are able to chose your guitar teacher.

One of the advantages of online guitar lessons is the fact that you are able to chose your guitar teacher.

Before you start an online guitar course you can find out about the teacher who runs the course. Lots of times you can hear and see him on some free guitar lessons the site offers, or you can search the web. You Tube is a great source to find something about the guitar teacher you would maybe get some lessons from.

Online guitar schools, like Jam Play ( visit Jam Play )and Guitar Tricks ( visit Guitar Tricks ) have a lot of guitar teachers, and, if you enroll in one of these guitar schools, you are able to follow lessons from every one of these guitar teachers. So you can try out different teachers, and that is a very good thing indeed. Teachers have a certain style, and by following lessons from different teachers, you will get a much broader education.

Get Guitar Super Stars

Some of the guitar courses we offer in The Guitar Classroom are created by one person, but not all of them. For example Team Method is a guitar course that is given by a team of guitar teachers, the same with Guitar Super Stars, a guitar course that has a group of teachers. The Guitar Super Stars system will allow you to excel with picking technique, rudiments, scales, and you will find that you have an incredible memory records.

Guitar Super Stars

Sarah Jackson from Boston is a pupil of Guitar Super Stars, and she has this to say about the course:

“Hi Andy,

Guitar Super Stars has exploded my guitar skills, and I can now play all my favorite songs… and what’s more amazing is that I did this in under 6 weeks following your lessons!

I was just a fairly average picker before, but now I’m shredding like Clapton on horse! NO KIDDIN’! Everybody I know is amazed at where these skills suddenly came from! They keep asking who taught me and I keep telling them: It’s all at Guitar Super Stars.

Thanks Andy, and please keep the lessons coming, as I can’t wait!”

Online Guitar Schools

As I mentioned before, online guitar schools are an excellent way to learn to play guitar, especially if you like to get lessons from a lot of different guitar teachers.

Guitar Tricks has 45 professional teachers, and, if you join Guitar Tricks for only $12.95 a month, you will be able to follow lessons from all of these 45 teachers.

Learn To Play Guitar With Guitar Tricks
