The Reason I Bought A Flying V

Wednesday, August 11th, 2010

Let me tell you about the best deal I ever made. Flashback to 1976- while taking part in at a school town within the American Midwest, I found a small music store that was in the midst of their ‘Going Out Of Business’ sale.

So after all, I decided to see what they had. Lo and behold, on the very again of the shop, hanging on the wall I saw a model new 1976 Gibson Flying V. The price? $350 with the case. I didn’t know it on the time- $350 still appeared like a reasonably hefty sum of money to spend for any electric guitar, not less than for me- however that $350 ended up being the very best money that I ever spent. Presently, that vintage V goes for round $4,000 on eBay.

But in fact, I’ll never promote it. In reality, it’s earmarked to give to my middle daughter (who aspires to play guitar sooner or later) once I ultimately depart this earth. That guitar is still my most prized possession- I nonetheless use it when the style I’m attempting to attain demands that balls-out, metallic crunch. In reality, the best guitar solos ever coaxed out of my body were created on that fantastic axe. That guitar was my weapon for literally hundreds of rock shows- the sound, particularly throughout my solos, was without match.

The unique purpose that I turned interested in the form and the sound of a Flying V was due to one explicit lead guitarist- my hero, Michael Schenker. The fluidity of his blistering lead solo traces was unmistakable. He would anchor one leg of the guitar between his legs and just WAIL. And I knew that one day, when the opportunity introduced itself, I’d be making this guitar my own.

I did dress it up a bit for the stage, of course. I’m going to make a confession right here- I wished to have a mirrored pickguard, however didn’t wish to spend the money to purchase it. So I came up with a plan. The factory the place I worked at the time was within the business of creating motor homes. The mirrors present in motor homes are product of pliable plexiglass- very easy to chop on a bandsaw. I took my original pickguard off the guitar, traced the outline onto one of those mirrors, reduce it to form and sanded the edges, and voila! Mirrored pickguard. And it was AWESOME. That factor displays spotlights and entrance lighting and sends their reflection again into the crowd like a laser beam. It was nice for blinding drunken patrons and checking out fascinating-wanting girls in the darkened rooms. guitar tapping

However at all times, it got here again to the sound. I’ve but to play metal solos on any other guitar that allowed that degree of velocity and availability to the uppermost frets. With the general public who saw me play again in the day, I will likely be perpetually identified with that lovely guitar. Hmm, possibly I should simply make preparations for it to be buried with me. If my daughter doesn’t thoughts, that is.
