What came first, the chicken or the amazingly gifted singing voice?

I’ll explain why this is such an important question to ponder when pursuing singing lessons. There have been hundreds of thousands of students who have become disenchanted with the prospect of singing well, let alone singing professionally, simply because they took the wrong approach to learning how. and it has to do with the classical mindset of singing- something still being taught to aspiring singers in high schools and colleges today.

And there is a better way to become good. There are tips for singing that go beyond the classical box.

A conversation with a good friend of mine, a classically trained singer, made it painfully obvious that I needed to address the “natural range” conspiracy. He recently explained to me that, for the amount of money I spent on CD and DVD singing lessons, I could have had 10 real lessons with a vocal instructor. He was also skeptical of the claims my virtual instructors were making about increasing people’s vocal range almost immediately. Digging a little further, after I bragged about my own progress and increased abilities, he argued that it’s futile (more like “improper”) to pursue a greater vocal range.

To this day I still don’t know what’s futile about the fact that I can now sing higher than I ever could before. He pointed out that there are successful singers in all vocal registers (bass, baritone, tenor, etc), and that you need to work within your range. His advice had the faint residue of a hopeless “if you’re not gifted, get over it” kind of tone.

Here’s my big point. Before analyzing where you’re at as a singer, and deciding what box you’re going to fit in, you should first learn to use your voice- fully and freely. I mean, does anybody know what their “natural range” is? Do You? If not, how would you go about figuring it out?

Here, this helps: IT DOESN”T MATTER! It’s been my experience, by and far, that this issue has discouraged more would-be singers than it’s ever helped. The truth of the matter is that you need to focus on how to use the full range of your voice, and when you do, and as you develop your voice, you’ll see immense improvement in both range and tone quality.

This is why the coaches I choose to listen to confidently guarantee at least an Octave increase in vocal range in a relatively short amount of time! This is also why I’m hitting notes that I’ve never been able to hit before, and why, after 2 or 3 years of learning now, I’m still just as motivated to use those same old CD’s I bought at first- because I am still getting better, and more and more I’m becoming the singer I’ve always wanted to be!
