Gibson ES-335 Big Red 1959

The Gibson ES-335 is the first produced semi solid body electric guitar, it is semi solid body because a solid block of wood runs through its body, only the wings are hollow. Up till 1952 Gibson produced full hollow body guitars, but a drawback of this type of guitar is the fact that they produce a lot of feedback whenever they are loudly amplified.

In 1952 Gibson introduced the famous Les Paul solid body guitar, and in 1958 they came with the Gibson ES-335 a sort compromise between a solid and a hollow body guitar. The Gibson ES-335 does still have the warm tone of a hollow body guitar, but not the amount of feedback associated with the hollow body’s. The guitar is still very well liked by a lot of guitarist.

Variations on the Gibson ES-335

The CS-336 is quiet similar to the ES-335, having a bit smaller body.

Trini Lopez Standard is a guitar based on the Gibson ES-335 It does not have f holes in its body, but diamond shaped sound holes.

Gibson Tom DeLonge Signature ES-333 has the Gibson dirty fingers humbucker pickup near the bridge, which gives the guitar a distorted kind of sound.

The ES-355 was between 1952 and 1982 one of Gibsons top models. It came in a wide variety of models, some with a tremolo, and there was also a model with a stereo wiring. B.B.King was one of the famous guitarist playing the Gibson ES-355

The ES-345 Although often confused withe the ES-335, The main difference is the Varitone switch (a parametric equalizer with 5 presets)

One famous guitarist who used the Gibson ES-355 is blues guitarist B.B.King. In 1981 Gibson launched the B. B. King Lucille, a B. B. King signature model based on the ES-345.The Lucille effectively replaced the ES-345, which was discontinued a year after the Lucille was launched. Today the ES-345 is available as a reissue, as is its counterpart the ES-355
