You can understand what the book is talking about. For example, if you are a visual learner, a book with elaborate diagrams or that comes with some video can be very helpful.
Learn how to read music. Basically, playing guitars is all about notes. The quicker you learn these notes, the better chances you will have at playing your guitar. In short, if you do not know how to read the notes, you will not know where the finger will go next in order to produce a particular note.
